Floyd and Bess Shields came to the California desert in 1924 and started Shields Date Garden, working long and hard to build up their business and educate their customers about date culture. In the beginning, Mr. Shields would give his lecture in the garden. As the popularity of his lecture grew, Mr. Shields incorporated a slide show, then recorded his presentation in conjunction with the slide show so that the show could be run several times a day. Today, the 15-minute film Romance and Sex Life of the Date shows continuously during store hours, where you can still hear Mr. Shields talking about his favorite subject: the Date. Mt. San Jacinto State Park offers 54 miles of hiking trails located within a 14,000 acre pristine wilderness, one of the last in California. All trails are accessed by exiting the Mountain Station and descending a concrete pathway less than a mile to Long Valley. Long Valley Discovery Trail: Follow the nature trail posts around a ¾ mile (1.2 km) loop. This easy level trail provides an excellent introduction to the Park's plants and animals. Desert View Trail: A 1.5 mile (2 km) loop trail leads to a number of scenic overlooks and forest views. Short climbs, moderately strenuous. Round Valley: A 2.5 miles of trail leads to picturesque Round Valley. Fairly level trails, short climbs, moderately strenuous. Wellmans Divide: From Round Valley to Wellmans Divide is a 1-mile hike with a 600 feet elevation gain. San Jacinto Peak: This is a 5.5 mile hike one way will take you to the second highest point in southern California.

The Tahquitz Canyon Trail is a two mile loop trail which leads to Tahquitz Falls and back. From the Visitor Center to the falls you will be gaining 350 feet in elevation. The trail is steep and rocky with many rock steps to climb. Tahquitz Canyon is best known for its exquisite rushing waterfall and the cool, deep pools of precious water that can be found throughout the area.

The Indian Canyons are comprised of three canyons: Palm, Andreas and Murray. Each offers guests a breathtaking journey through an abundance of plant life that stands in stark contrast to the surrounding desert mountainsides. The scenic trails wind through rocky gorges that give way to wandering natural springs, and some of these streams continue running throughout the year. Guests can also find bedrock mortars and metates used by the Cahuilla people centuries ago to prepare food.

The Whitewater Preserve hosts one of the best trailheads to the San Gorgonio Wilderness and the 2,650 mile‐ long Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail (PCT). The PCT traverses the Wilderness from south to north on its journey from Mexico to Canada, and is accessible from the parking area at the Whitewater Preserve via a half‐mile connector trail that begins at the ranger station. Visitors are welcome to walk along any of the preserve trails, or take one of the hikes listed below. Please sign in at the Ranger Station or trailhead, and always carry plenty of water! 1. Canyon View Loop Trail 3.5 mile loop (Moderate) 2. Whitewater Preserve to Red Dome 2 miles one way, 4 miles round‐trip (Easy‐moderate)

1.5 Miles- Elevation Gain: 850' -To reach this trail, go to the corner of the Desert Museum's north parking lot. The Museum Trail rises above the city of Palm Springs, and offers spectacular views of Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley. From the parking lot at the Museum, to the top of the trail is a good, hard, uphill hike. When you finally reach the picnic tables at the top you will be ready for a rest. This trail intersects with the North Lykken trail, and you can hike down into Chino Canyon, or you can take the North Lykken to Ramon Road and walk back to the Palm Springs Desert Museum from there ( or you can use two cars and have one waiting at the bottom on Ramon Road ). The Museum Trail also intersects with the Skyline Ridge Route, which will let you continue all the way to the Palm Springs Tramway via the Skyline "Trail" if you want, this is called the Cactus to Clouds Hike (SEVEN HOURS PLUS -Elevation Gain: 8,000').

The Trail That Leads To Bob Hope's House -Elevation Gain 800' -The Araby trail can be accessed at the entrance to the Rimcrest / Southridge development . the trail can be found on the left (east) side of the road, before you get to the guard gate. Park in the dirt on the right side of the road immediately after turning onto the Rimcrest/Southridge road. This trail gives the Hiker great views of the Coachella Valley, and you get to hike right past Bob Hope's house!! It is a fairly easy hike from the start at the Rimcrest/Southridge gate to Bob Hope's house. You can forget about buying one of those postcards of Bob Hope's house, instead send your friends one that you took while hiking right next to it! After you hike up the Araby past Bob Hope's house, you can continue up the trail for access to other trails. Like any of the other trails in the area, even in mild temperature conditions you will need plenty of water.

The facility offers two very different golf courses. The South Course is an 18-hole championship course that was Redesigned by Casey O’Callaghan in 2004 along with consultant, Amy Alcott, LPGA Hall of Famer. This par 72, 6,582 yard championship course has four large lakes that come into play on six of the holes, but the most extraordinary feature are the 5 five par holes. The course also features rolling mounds and fairways and more than 850 palm trees, including some 500 Washingtonia filifera palm trees native to the area. The North Course is a par 72, 6,943 yard course that was designed by well known architect, William P. Bell and is heavily steeped in tradition. This classically designed course meanders through Palm Springs’ stylish “Canyon” region which boasts a wide array of authentic mid-century modern homes and stunning mountain views. The course has six challenging water hazards the largest of which hosts the historic Walt Disney fountain.

Winding through natural sand dunes and surrounded by an abundance of native vegetation, Desert Dunes is the perfect marriage of links style design and desert golf. Crafted by legendary golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr., this course is widely considered one of the best tests of golf in the valley. Desert Dunes is the best example of a links-style course here in the desert. Rolling fairways are framed by native desert areas making accuracy off the tee a premium. The generous and undulating greens are surrounded by collection areas and strategically placed bunkers, including one right in the middle of our signature double green on the 9th and 18th holes. Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort offers two challenging championship golf courses. The Legend Course at Tahquitz Creek is a par-72, 6,600-yard course sporting a traditional layout. It was originally designed by William (Billy) Bell in the 1950s, but recent renovations have marked the addition of 40 new bunkers to the Legends Course. The newer of the two golf courses at Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort, the Resort Course, is a Ted Robinson design that debuted in 1995. A par-72, 6,705-yard course with four sets of tees, the Resort Course, also features a desert links-style layout. Both Tahquitz Creek golf courses offer views of the San Jacinto Mountains.

The Mesquite Golf Course in an 18 hole championship course with 5 lakes that provide numerous water hazards, fairways that are lined with mature, native trees and features 800 palm trees frameng majestic mountain scenes you can almost reach out and touch. In 1985, Bert Stamps uniquely designed the Mesquite Golf Course which proudly boasts 6 par 3's, 6 par 4's and 6 par 5's; 3 of each on both 9's. The McCallum Theatre is a 1,127-seat state-of-the-art theatre and concert venue located on the southern edge of the campus of College of the Desert in Palm Desert. Named after a pioneering Coachella Valley family, the facility's opening in January, 1988 aired as a special on NBC. Since its inception, the McCallum Theatre has operated as a non-profit organization, with more than 400 volunteers serving as ushers and other staff during performances.
