Barb Barb was born in Seattle, moved to North Hollywood for her teenage years and attended UCLA until she decided to become a hippie at UC Berkeley in the 60's, and received a Masters in Psychology from San Jose State University. Lake Tahoe became her home for the next 40 years where she became the skier, hiker, lover of Mother Nature that she is today. She has worked as an IRS Tax Auditor, a travel agent, and a Psychology and Sociology instructor at Sierra College and Sierra Nevada College. Hiking and backpacking in the Canadian Rockies, the Himalayas of Nepal, and Machu Picchu in Peru have been some of the highlights of her adventure travels. She has kayaked and rafted many rivers, lakes, and the Pacific Ocean. Her bicycle is often a substitute for her car. She is working on writing the Great American Novel, and her goal is to visit every National Park in the US before she realizes she is getting old.
Marty graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1969, while owning a restaurant and a gas station which helped him pay for college and give him his start as an entrepreneur. He spent 6 months driving cross country in 1973, looking for eternal summer. He arrived in Arizona in July, and finding 115 degrees and no trees, decided to look elsewhere. He fell in love with the beauty of Lake Tahoe, and started a magazine which he printed himself. This turned into Tahoe Crafts Printing, which grew into the largest printing company in the area. Marty sold it after 25 years in 1998. Marty is the proud owner of a Harley Fat Boy, which he rides as often as possible, and he keeps healthy and strong by practicing in karate as a Black Belt in Tang Soo Do.
Jake graduated from UC San Diego in June, 2006 with a Major in Economics and a minor in Theatre. He was a ski racer for most of his life, and was Co-Captain of the UCSD ski team. He seems to have taken the best from both of his parents, being a backpacker, skier, and budding entrepreneur. Jake traveled extensively up and down the East Coast of the United States, then South America. When it came time to get to working, Jake offered to take over the management of Ballantines Original Hotel in Palm Springs. Marty and Barb took Jake in as a family partner and he took over in September of 2007. He completely renovated the property and reopened it as Palm Springs Rendezvous in January of 2008 (now the Coolest Place to Stay in Palm Springs). Jake was also recently named Manager of the Year by the California Hotel and Lodging Association for the year 2009! If you are a theater buff, ask Jake about his upcoming shows. He has a passion for the theater and one day you just may see his name in lights. His newest passion is Crossfit, an intense fitness philosophy, and Jake is now a level 1 trainer. If you need a good workout ask Jake about Desert Crossfit, the gym he trains at, and he will be sure you get a good sweat.
Betty and the Inn both got their start about the same time (1930's!!) Her start was in Minnesota, oh sure, you betcha. Her husband's Air Force career took them from coast to coast and England and back with many stops along the way. They even had their own B&B and Ostrich Ranch near Sedona, AZ. She has been the wife of the same lucky guy for 56 years, Mom to 4 daughters, school teacher, business partner, and list goes on and on.
